Omaha, Nebraska, USA
This adaptive reuse project entailed converting a shuttered bookstore into a tech library and incubator space for local residents of all ages. The nonprofit facility houses classrooms, computer banks, meeting rooms, maker spaces, and social areas. Vibrant colors and ample light create a welcoming atmosphere.
Holland Energy Park |
Holland, Michigan, USA
This natural gas facility is much more than a power plant. Based on community input, a visitor center and museum were incorporated into the building, enabling it to serve as a teaching tool. On the façade, the public areas are expressed as a vibrant red band that catches the attention of passing drivers.
BBSRC National Virology Centre: The Plowright Building |
Pirbright, Surrey, United Kingdom
Often isolated within a research facility, containment labs tend to lack social areas and natural light. This building marks a radical departure from the norm. Labs occupy the perimeter and encircle a central gathering space that falls within the containment boundary. This spatial configuration enables scientists to take a break without going through extensive decontamination measures.
