The Rodney Cook Sr. Park in Vine City replaces abandoned and empty lots with a 16-acre park and watershed management project that alleviates persistent flooding by capturing and storing up to 10 million gallons of stormwater. The completed park in Atlanta, Georgia, supports the community with new recreational programs and opportunities for local youth including neighborhood health and fitness programs, a fitness zone, a free climbing area, sport courts, plenty of open green space and a splash pad. Amenities such as a great lawn and amphitheater within the park provide ways for the community to gather, connect, and enjoy nature.

Affordable and workforce housing is a critical national and global challenge for which urban sprawl is an unsustainable solution. By utilizing abandoned strip commercial lands, placeless arterials can be transformed into “Grand Boulevards,” filled with places to live that are more affordable to the environment, to households, and to our cities. It is a comprehensive strategy to allow mixed use in commercial areas and direct the resulting increased tax base to housing subsidies and social services, and paving the way for next-generation transit, thus humanizing asphalt wastelands that divide communities.

As the third most populated state with more than 130 million people visiting each year, planning for Florida’s transportation future is imperative. Florida Statute 339.287 requires an Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Master Plan. Through research, extensive public engagement and collaboration with other state agencies, the Florida Department of Transportation developed a comprehensive plan that outlines the challenges and opportunities associated with electric vehicle charging station infrastructure along the state highway system and guides the development of future integrated mobility solutions. HDR was honored to support the development of the EVMP.
