Centralized Processing
This is the central processing point of the edge computing
data center system. These locations handle high processing, but non-urgent needs. Long-term storage and network cores reside here often with high value data assets to be highly protected and used for long term needs.
With few, centrally located sites, the core is a
traditional or hyper-scale data center site for
on-premises or cloud needs.
Core
Beyond the far edge of the system, 20 billion devices exist today, with that number expected to double in less than 5 years. Smart phones, IoT, and all of the technology that comes with it are producing more data today, than existed in the world ten years ago.
With billions of devices in the world today, the gap between the edge computing data center system and the users accessing them is known as the “last mile”.
Consumers
These aggregate locations pick-up more processing at a lower latency (faster) than the core, and re-direct traffic throughout the edge computing data center system. They push data out to the access points and ultimately the user, or to the core for storage
or high-needs processing (AI or ML).
Aggregate sites, often in the hundreds, are modular or other non-traditional data centers (like central offices) or smaller traditional sites (like co-location or regional data centers).
Aggregation
These access sites represent the far edge of the system allowing for real-time processing and ultra-low latency for on-demand needs. These hand-off more compute intense needs to other locations, and serve as the entry-point of data into the edge computing data system.
Access/Radio sites are small, ranging in the thousands, and located at roadside, tower, rooftops, or other remote locations.
